Know The Signs and Solutions

The words narcissistic, passive aggressive and gaslighting are fast becoming ‘trend’ words that are overused,  misused and out of context, which dangerously dilutes the seriousness of these diagnosed descriptors for those on the receiving end of such pathological behaviours.

True gaslighting is the most Machiavellian, malicious  form of emotional and psychological abuse, commonly attributed to dysfunctional marriages and so called ‘love’ relationships.

However, be aware, that there are many areas where  this insidious and dangerous form of abuse can occur e.g.   friendships,  groups, sports clubs and the workplace. This post will outline what can happen in the workplace and comes with a trigger warning.

While this blog topic may be uncomfortable to read, the genuine intent in writing is to inform and share healing strategies with those who may have suffered, or are still suffering, in this awful space.  Hopefully it helps to avoid the potential litany of severe psychological consequences and guides those who have to manage these distressing situations.

Depending on how long the gaslighting has been going on, the victim can suffer from a plethora of mental health diagnoses resulting in a quagmire of self doubt:

  • post traumatic stress disorder

  • mental exhaustion
  • heightened anxiety
  • depressed mood
  • erosion of self confidence
  • loss of motivation and self worth

In an effort to empower both men and women to navigate this mistreatment, outlined below are some of the characteristics and behaviours of a Gaslighter, how to recognise if/when it’s happening to you, strategies for managing this toxic environment and how to take back control and ownership of yourself.

The Signs

A Gaslighter is smart, intelligent and a master manipulator who, more often than not,  is excellent at their job.

A Gaslighter can falsely appear as your best friend/workplace ally;  taking you into their confidence, feigning care and in some way, shape or form, ensuring their good work and acts of kindness towards you are in full view of as many coworkers as possible; very cleverly covering their proverbial!

More than likely your initial period working with a Gaslighter will be positive, with your work being complimented, your thoughts and opinions valued and you may even have felt respected and appreciated. However, be aware, your success is actually a massive issue, as it means the Gaslighter has no real control over you yet and is not the centre of attention.

Eventually, the slow and artful employment of invisible gaslighting techniques and passive aggressive bullying techniques begin in an effort to gain the complete control they must have.

A Gaslighter is usually only one person, however, it is not unheard of for them to cleverly rally a band of trusty supporters to back them up in their quest to disrespect and discredit you, cast aspersions on your competency and character, as well as sabotaging or undermining your work efforts.

It comes as no surprise therefore, that when birds of a feather flock together, the same attitudes and behaviours abound from the Gaslighter’s supporters towards the person targeted.  This is known as splitting, as they love to pit people against each other.

A professional Gaslighter is often also a narcissist who, along with all the attention, needs complete knowledge and control of their target’s work role, connections, ideas and achievements.

Remember, the ultimate goal here is to be in control of you, discredit you, your character and undermine your performance in your role, thereby creating such an elusively hostile environment that you may well end up leaving, which after all, is their desired outcome.

Make no bones about it, those that employ these tactics are fully aware of what they are doing, they know it is wrong and if you challenge them directly, they will only up the ante to wreak even more workplace havoc for you.    It is literally their way or the highway!

The most difficult and frustrating thing about the gaslighting environment in the workplace is its invisibility.  This causes the victim to feel alone, confused and on the edge of mental health crisis, believing that they have nowhere to turn to for help.

But don’t despair people!   There is hope!!!

The Solutions

Should you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position of receiving this type of toxicity, there are a number of ways to approach taking back control of your work environment, setting boundaries and minimising a Gaslighter’s damage to your mental health.

1. Educate Yourself On Gaslighting
It’s hard not to take things personally in a gaslighting situation. However, realise that Gaslighters are the ones with the problem. They’re trying to manipulate you, typically to regain control of their own lives or boost their bad self-esteem. Certainly, there’s no allowing, or excusing pathological behaviour, but once you view their actions from that perspective, you’ll be able to take their treatment less personally and regain some power in the relationship.

2. Get Some Outside Advice
Because Gaslighting clouds your own perception of the situation, confide in your family and friends, professionals e.g. your doctor or a psychologist/counsellor,  for support and a more objective reading of what’s going on.

3. Reconnect With Your Intuition
To recover from Gaslighting, you need to stand up for yourself and your emotions. But first, you need to remember what and how you feel. Victims of prolonged gaslighting often stop listening to their own voice because when they’re always criticised/negated/disregarded/ignored, what’s the point, right?  Try journaling or meditating to rekindle your inner voice. With more awareness of your emotions, you’ll be better prepared to fight for them.

4. Don't Confront Them Directly
Since Gaslighters respond to criticism with personal attacks, they’ll feel threatened by any direct challenge and retaliate. They may even accuse you of gaslighting them. So, as much as you can, try to avoid contact.  Instead, consult HR for strategies on minimising your time with them.

5. Write It Down
When you have to engage with a Gaslighter, write down exactly what happened. Describe what happened, when it happened and how it made you feel. By putting it on paper, you’re taking the time to process, as well as validate, your own emotions, which will help you resist the manipulation. Also, the next time you’re questioning your sanity, you can read those past incidents to get the record straight.
Bonus: If the situation escalates to HR, you’ll be able to support your case with documentation of specific events.

6. Consciously Affirm Your Self
In your log, always follow up your entries with a personal affirmation: “I am valued,” “I am worthy,” “I am loved.” Even if you have to fake it at first, it’ll help you repair your self-worth after a gaslighting incident.

7. Prepare For A Struggle—And Leave If You Have To
Remember, Gaslighters thrive off their control of you, your desire for approval and fear of abandonment/criticism and control. As much as they upset you, you try to make things work in an effort to make the situation better, trying to avoid feeding their baseless reasons for further rejecting you. So, prepare to second-guess yourself as you break away from their web, it takes time to heal from this type of assault.

In the end, if all your efforts fail and if you are not fully supported by your workplace, it may be the safest and most appropriate option for you to leave your job. Your sanity and self-worth are way more valuable than sacrificing your mental health for someone's unchecked ego and a salary!

Memorable Movie Making

I have this wonderful little book called Secret Daily Teachings.  It's one of those written gems that gifts you with pearls of wisdom, food for thought and insights to living your best life.

Today's teaching invited me to mull over a few positive changes that I could further incorporate into my life.

'How is the movie of your life going? Do you need to make any script changes ....... Is there any editing that you want to do?'

I was unaware until latterly that the movie of my life is solely of my creation.  The good, the bad and the ugly presented for all to see - an outer representation of the inner workings of my mind.  It was time to rewrite the horror/psychological thriller script that had played in my head for as long as I could remember.

Learning that I had the power to choose and change my thoughts from negative to positive, black to white, dark to light, wrong to right, or any other variation thereof, was the start of a deep internal spiritual shift towards self-acceptance and self love whilst pursuing my own dreams.

I admit, initially it did feel really weird practicing positive self-talk that would shut out the negativity of my ego, but honestly, persistence is the key, as is trusting the process without question. Today I can look in the mirror and smile at myself without a whisper of self criticism.  Believe me that's momentous!

There is absolute freedom in knowing nothing is set in stone; I can edit the script at any time, even rewrite the whole movie plot to ensure I am living life on my terms and loving it.

We only get one chance at living this life to its fullest, so if you're not content with how your movie is panning out, get in touch with your inner director, rewrite the script and reshoot the scenes to ensure the happiest of Hollywood endings!!

Have You Heard Yourself?

I had no idea as a youngster that I had any control over my thinking.  I believed my thoughts were just the product of the way I was born, like having brown hair or blue eyes.  I did not realise I had the power of choice.

From a very early age I suffered from anxiety.  So much so that at the age of 7 I was put on Valium!!  I remember being given this medication at night time to help me sleep.  Crazy I know, but I am guessing back in the sixties they really didn't delve much into child psychology or contemplate that a 7 year old could have an anxiety neurosis.

I had such a vivid imagination for all things terrifying.  If someone was sick, then my mind and thoughts convinced me it was my turn next.  I remember one time even thinking my throat would bleed because my friend had had his tonsils out and he'd haemorrhaged.  Being so young I had no idea that a throat only bled if something major was going on and my mind said it was dangerous and could happen to me, so I believed it.

Looking back at the little girl I was, I can gently laugh at how my thought processes went.  I feel a lot of love and protection for the little girl in me and wish I could have told her that the fear she lived with in her mind could be switched off just by choosing what to think or focus on. It would have saved years of torture, believe me.

Today I am in the process of learning how to hear my thoughts and how to change the negative to the positive.

It's as simple and as difficult as sitting quietly, breathing gently and deeply, focusing on my breath, imagining a stream of air flowing down into my diaphragm and back out again.

While I am mindfully breathing my mind jabbers such a load of rubbish. The incessant noise of my thoughts is constant simply because that is the function of the brain and the best way to quieten that noise is to let the thoughts pass in and out of my conscious mind without resistance.  The surprising and unexpected outcome was seeing my thoughts disperse as quickly as they arrived in my conscious mind, leaving me without internal chatter for a few seconds.  No internal chatter is a state of bliss with an overwhelming sense of connection, peace and fearlessness.

As time has moved on and I have practiced more and more of this type of meditation, I can now exercise my power of choice; I shut down the negative, fear inducing thoughts and replace them with positive, life enhancing thoughts.  It's as easy as looking right to left.

Do yourself a huge favour, take some quiet time each day to hear your internal voice and if it is not enhancing your life, change the track that is playing in your brain.  It's all about living a happy existence people, do whatever it takes to enjoy each moment of your life experience!

Let Them Go!

You all know how much I love finding little snippets of sanity that speak to my soul and this quote from T. D. Jakes is one of those gems.

"Let Them Go!

There are people who can walk away from you.

And hear me when I tell you this.  When people walk away from you, let them walk!

I don't want you to talk another person into
staying with you,
loving you,
calling you,
caring about you,
coming to see you,
staying attached to you.

I mean - hang up the phone!

When people walk away from you, let them walk.  Your destiny is never tied to anybody who left." T. D. Jakes

This little gem gifts me with a few pearls of wisdom:

Love myself enough to know that what another person thinks of me is none of my business, and if they do not want to be in my company that is their issue, not mine.

Knowing my own worth is the ultimate in self respect - no self respecting person ever needs to beg to be loved, cared for, considered, or spent time with.

The world will not end if a relationship/friendship ends. Sometimes that's just the way the cookie crumbles. People really do come into your life for a reason/season. Don't hate - appreciate.

My destiny is only ever tied to the quality of my thinking and my attitude to life and relationships. Not to anyone who left!

Letting go is such a powerful thing to do in life, no matter if it's a person, place, thing or attitude.  Surrender always brings peace of mind and spirit, making life a happy, free experience.

Thank you T.D. Jakes

Flex Your Emotional Muscles

I read an article on emotional strength yesterday that is one of those pieces of writing that packs a punch of truth and begs the reader to question just how emotionally strong they are.

For me, it showed all the 'working out' I have done over the years, especially in this last year, has made me a lean mean emotionally strong machine!!

Having powerful, well defined, emotional strength brings a myriad of benefits that taught me how to put myself first without being selfish.

I can't say that I've always been emotionally strong, I have had challenges in my life (like every other human on the planet) that showed up gaping holes of emotional weakness, but I have always had the strength of character to know that deep down I had it in me to do whatever it takes to live my best life, face myself and to strengthen those weak emotional muscles.

Below is a list of '15 things Emotionally Strong People Don't Do' taken from the aforementioned punch packing article. I'm going to relate each point to myself and think it's a great point of reference for anyone to check the state of their emotional wellbeing.

1. They Don’t Beg For Attention
Needing attention is directly linked to emotion. Those who feel the need for recognition only find themselves experiencing feelings of worth when others make them feel needed; it’s as if these people are uncertain of their value, or if they have any ounce of self-worth. Feeling unsure of your worth is a self-fulfilling prophecy; if you don’t know you matter, then no one will ever believe you do.
I've been there! I have in the past begged for attention: wanted life to be all about me, wanted others to make me feel good about myself.  I gave others the power to decide whether I was happy or not.  I allowed others to dictate facets of my personality e.g. that I was a 'scaredy cat'.  How ridiculous!  Today I know my own worth.  I matter.  I love that I matter and it makes me demand - in the softest terms of the word - to be respected, honoured and treated in a healthy manner on all levels.
2. They Don’t Allow Others To Bring Them Down
Emotional strength requires resilience. This world is filled with haters and trolls. There are jealous eyes lurking around every corner. The unfortunate truth is that often the people who hold us back the most are those closest to us. Getting rid of these people is often the best solution, but also the most difficult. If you can quietly remove these people from your life, that’s one fewer bridge burned and much less of an emotional trigger.
You know how you know when someone says something that is unacceptable to you? How your spirit reacts to words that fall out of other people's mouths under the guise of caring, or loving you, or trying to help you understand??  Yet while you are listening to these words, your BS radar is screaming like a siren??  My advice.. LISTEN to the screaming siren.
I've learned to trust my instincts.  To honour myself and know immediately when I am being brought down by another.  Previously I would have been distraught by those negative actions towards me but today I pity people that feel the need to behave that way, so I quietly remove those people from my life, or take myself out of the equation. I will not allow myself to be in the situation for the negative BS to continue.  THAT feels GOOD!

3. They Don’t Hold Grudges
If you’re holding a grudge, then you already care more about a situation than you should. If a person apologizes genuinely, forgive him or her. If this person doesn’t apologize, then don’t interact with him or her, but don’t hold grudges. People with whom you seek to alienate and hold grudges against take up too much of your mental energy, doing more harm than good.
Of course I have held grudges in  my life.  What a waste of emotional energy though. In Alcoholics Anonymous they have a saying:  Resentment is the number 1 killer.  Believe it folks, if you are sitting stewing over some unkind treatment of you then you are drinking poison hoping the perpetrator is going to die!!!  Do yourself a favour and let that negativity go. The offender is not even thinking about what they've done so don't let your emotional muscles weaken because of someone else.

4. They Never Stop Doing Their Own Thing
Emotionally strong individuals do what they do because they love doing it. They don’t plan on slowing down or stopping for anyone who deems their happiness inappropriate.
I used to be such a people pleaser.  As a young woman I thought that if I did what everyone else wanted then we would all be happy smiley people..... except Karen!!  Don't die to yourself all the time.  It's not good for your sense of self.  Today I do what I want to do and if others don't like it.. TOUGH!!

5. They Never Stop Believing In Themselves
Those who love themselves and understand themselves — those who aren’t afraid or proud to be themselves — never doubt themselves. You amount to your own self-worth, not a shilling more.
You know I used to have trouble with this believing in myself business.  Other people's words like "you've failed", "you're no good at this" "you shouldn't do that" "you can't possibly want to do this" etc etc.. and my own self criticism kept me emotionally stuck in negativity.
Today I absolutely 100 percent believe in myself, even though to others it might seem I try and fail over and over again in certain areas of my life - my take on it is - I NEVER give up, I persevere, I am always teachable and willing to learn new ways to live my best life.  GO Karen!!! :)

6. They Don’t Act Like Bitches Or Assh*les
People are mean. But we wonder, why? Being a jerk is only good as an intimidation factor, and if you’re trying to intimidate people, then you better be a negotiator by profession; if you’re intimidating just for the sake of it, you’re obviously overcompensating for a lack of confidence. Do you also drive a very large automobile, perhaps? I hear they make pills for that.
Can honestly say I do not act like a B or an AH.

7. They Know Better Than To Let Just Anyone Into Their Lives
The emotionally strong are emotionally strong for a reason: They don’t expose themselves to people who break down their defenses and crush their morale. Most people in the world are lost and will be more than happy to take you along with them. Don’t let an awful acquaintance ruin your happiness.
Being selective about your friends, lovers and even family is a skill well learned.  If you allow toxic unhappy people to be around you all the time, then you are going to get more of the same in your life.  If you have good, happy, honest, non judgemental people in your life, your life is going to be a great experience.

8. They Aren’t Afraid To Love
If you’re afraid to love, you don’t have enough confidence in yourself. You obviously think you can’t be in a lasting relationship, but only in one that is doomed for disaster. You don’t want to get hurt again because getting hurt really sucks. There is no reason for you to get your heart broken again because you are awesome. If things don’t work out, it’s not you. It’s the two of you together. Unless, of course, you are an awful human being; in that case, it is you.
Thankfully, I am no longer afraid to love.   Taking risks and being 'vulnerable' in love is all part of the roller coaster ride of relationships. Nothing in this world is perfect. Partners make mistakes and so do you, so either work through it, forgive and decide to carry on living a life of love or get your butt out of there and move on. Easier said than done I know, but I think that is the choice we have.  Love or Leave.

9. They Don’t Lie In Bed Dreading The Day Ahead Of Them
The best part of your day should be the moment you wake up and realize you’re still alive. We take life for granted too regularly.
I can't say I ever lie in bed dreading the day ahead.  I always look forward to what the day will bring.  Thank you!

10. They’re Not Afraid Of Slowing Down
Emotionally strong people aren’t in need of constant action and excitement. They don’t need to run around all day and keep moving in order to avoid their demons. They appreciate a slow moment because it brings them closer to what it feels like to do nothing but living, breathing. This is not to say that they don’t enjoy excitement in their lives, but they aren’t junkies and are more than happy to just go for a walk and smell the roses.
I LOVE my own company.  I love that I don't have to be going to parties or out shopping or on the phone talking for hours or have a television on in the background all the time.  I still enjoy all those things, however, my life will not end if they are not happening and I enjoy being my own friend.

11. They Don’t Do Things They Don’t Want To Do
We all do things that we don’t love to do, but we should never do things that we don’t want to do. The emotionally strong understand that and almost always manage to figure out a way to focus on what they love, which allows them to figure out what they need to do, in order to do what they love. Although they may not love every second of it, they like doing what they are doing because it’s bringing them one step closer to what they would love to do.
Ain't that the truth!!  No more saying yes and meaning no, getting resentful towards the other person because you said yes when you meant no < Insanity right there.
12. They Have No Problem Saying “No”
If you can’t say “no,” you will get abused. You’ll be considered a pushover and no one will ever ask you for your opinion or take it seriously when you give it. Saying “no” reminds people that they don’t have control over you.
Saying 'No' used to be difficult for me because I was such a people pleaser.  I am happy to announce that I no longer have ANY problem saying 'No'.  I will not allow myself to be manipulated into any situation I do not want to be a part of and while I am still a kindhearted person, I am no pushover.

13. They Don’t “Forget” To Give Back
We’re not too busy or too poor to donate our money and/or time. We don’t forget, either. Some people just choose to ignore our responsibilities as human beings. The stronger you are emotionally, the more you come to appreciate others and life itself. You give life more worth and you begin to empathize with those who were dealt a bad hand.
Every single one of us has their particular way of giving back and I think that it is wise to remember that my way of giving back is not the same as yours.  People get themselves in a pickle if they expect your ways of doing things to be just like theirs.  Not happening folks.  That's why some are philanthropists, some are social carers, some are foster parents .. I could keep going but I will stop.  You get the picture.

14. They Don’t Feel The Need To Fit In
The stronger you are emotionally, the more independent you become. You don’t feel the need to fit in because you fit in where it matters: the world. People form smaller social groups that are often skewed and unhealthy. Wanting to fit in doesn’t say much more than “I’m afraid to be myself.”
This is the single most freeing feeling there is.  To not feel the need to fit in.  To not worry about what another thinks of you. To be totally happy in your own skin and like yourself, your beliefs and the way you live your life.   Can I hear an "Amen"???

15. They Don’t Forget That Happiness Is A Decision
Most importantly, the emotionally strong have learned to understand the power their brains have over both the mind and body. They understand that emotions are reactions, not reactions to direct physical causes, but to the way we perceive those causes. In other words, our emotions don’t reflect reality; rather, our emotions reflect the way we interpret reality. Understanding this gives us near-full control of our emotions and, therefore, our lives.
Singularly of prime importance to me is the decision to be happy.  I know my brain can ramble on about how hard this, that and the next thing is in my life and yes, there are hard things going on, but I choose my reaction and can change the direction of my thoughts with the snap of my fingers.  This takes practice, mindfulness and living in the present moment.  So, get present and be happy!!

Can you see the definition of your emotionally flexed muscles when you read through this checklist?  Do yourself a favour and get working out if there are any areas of weakness, it will really enhance your sense of well-being.

Shhhhhut Down the Fat Talk

I recently watched a fantastic ad clip called Shhhhhut Down the Fat Talk which struck me in my solar plexus; I heard all the every day negative talk that we beautiful womanly creatures insult ourselves with.  We do it mindlessly without realisation of the consequences.

Having lived my whole life battling weight and compulsive/addictive tendencies around food, I related only too well to the following list of insults that none of us would ever utter to our close friends.

I look fat

My thighs are too big

I have a muffin top

I hate how I look

My shape makes me look ugly

I don't have ankles I have cankles

and on and on the list goes.. all the self destructive talk and the sarcastic jokes about ourselves.  We have to SHHHHHUT DOWN the Fat Talk girls, we need to replace all those negatives above to the positives below:

I look great

My thighs are healthy

I am a curvy goddess

I love how I look

My shape is perfect for me right now

I have a great pair of legs

I am perfect just the way I am..

This list needs to be endless!!  Add to it every day, turn off the Fat Talker and turn on the Self Lover - watch the difference it will make in your life!
